Mid/late teens grade quarter horses gelding. Approximately 14.1 hands and stocky.
'Tato has been in NY for 3 years and has mostly been used as a practice horse for heeling and breakaway. On the ground he is super quiet, loads, hauls and ties great. Will go in a standing stall and stand on cross ties no problem. Easy to fly spray, bath and good for farrier and vet.
Prior to coming to NY he was primarily used as a trail horse and unknown history from a horse trader out west before that.
Under saddle I would say he needs an intermediate rider because he will test when first being ridden which mostly involves just trying to go back and stand at the fence with the other horses. He gives up pretty easy once he knows it's not getting him anywhere.
Someone was rough on him in his past so if you're all over the place with hands and legs you'll get him worked up and upset. Neck reins and stops great so he doesn't need to be yanked around. I lead my niece around on him and he's her favorite to brush and ride.
He's quiet in the box for practice but can get a little hot when on live cattle. Nothing crazy but will move around. He can get outrun by some of the cattle which is why we use him for practice but we have heeled and done breakaway on him in competition.
I've ran maybe 5-10 play barrel patterns on him at home and took him a couple weeks ago to his first barrel race to see how he did. He was a total Rockstar, quiet and did everything asked of him. I didn't push him much, mostly just wanted to see how he handled it and he did so without missing a step. I definitely think someone has run barrels on him in a previous life.
No soundness issues but he is older so he would probably benefit from a joint supplement. His back ankle has some scarring but it has never shown a problem or taken a lame step. Always been barefoot with us.
He would be an awesome 4h horse or immediate kid. I think he could excel in some western pleasure as well. He's stocky enough to leg around an adult as well and would be great for the trail enthusiast. He's a really nice horse but the owner is getting older and can't keep them all and I have 3 of my own so trying to find a great home for him.
He's up to date on shots and coggins, just had his feet done and I had his teeth done in the the fall.
